Service for rotating measurement tasks

Strain gauge application on measurement shafts for robust torque and force measurement

AXON applies strain gauges directly to shafts, tie rods, control arms and rotating parts. Signals are captured on the component, protected for the real environment and transmitted contactlessly in rotating applications – as a ready-to-use measurement solution for vehicle, test bench and machine.

Challenge

When loads must be measured, not estimated

In vehicle development, on the test bench and in field testing, indirect measurements are often not enough. Load paths are complex, interactions are hard to calibrate – and key components rotate or sit in tight installation spaces.

A strain gauge application on the part itself moves the measurement point to where the load actually occurs. The prerequisite is a build that protects mechanically, thermally and against media.

  • × Limited installation space
  • × Oil, water, contamination
  • × High temperatures and vibration
  • × Long test campaigns

AXON approach

Sensor, protection and telemetry as one build

AXON combines gauge position, strain gauge application, protection and telemetry into one measurement chain. The compact rotor unit supplies the sensor, digitizes the signal directly on the shaft and transmits the data contactlessly.

No isolated solution: sensor, protection, power supply, data transmission and calibration are designed together – even with tight installation spaces and moving components.

  • Gauge selection and position
  • Protection for the actual environment
  • Integration of the AXON rotor unit
  • Calibration with documentation

Application proof

What a reliable measurement solution really stands on

Load path

Measure directly on the part

Drive shafts, prop shafts, measurement flanges, tie rods, control arms and rotating gearbox components – reliable data for validation, durability and efficiency analysis.

Build

Robust against real environments

Multi-layer protection against moisture, oil, contamination, stone impact and temperature – not as an add-on, but as an integral part of the application.

Interface

Ready to connect on bench and vehicle

Telemetry based on AXON J1DB or J2D. The rotor unit captures and digitizes strain gauge signals directly on the rotating component; output is available as analog signal or via CAN bus, with calibration record included.

When strain gauge application makes sense

Strain gauge applications are ideal when force, strain or torque must be captured exactly where it occurs: directly on the component.

Typical parts include drive shafts, prop shafts, measurement flanges, tie rods, control arms and rotating gearbox components.

  • Torque measurement on shafts and flanges
  • Force and strain measurement on structural components
  • Measurements under real vehicle and test-bench conditions

Built for real environments

The quality of the measurement depends on the entire application, not only on the gauge. AXON protects the sensor stack against moisture, oil, dirt, stone impact and temperature.

For rotating applications, the strain gauge is combined with compact telemetry. The rotor unit supplies the sensor, digitizes the signal on the shaft and transmits measurement data contactlessly – without slip rings or maintenance-heavy cabling.

Process

From measurement goal to ready-to-use solution

1. Clarify component and goal

We check load path, installation space, temperature, media contact and required outputs.

2. Apply and protect gauges

The measurement point is prepared, gauges are applied and protected.

3. Integrate telemetry

For rotating parts, AXON telemetry such as J1DB is integrated: rotor unit, power supply, data transmission and CAN or analog output are prepared for the application.

4. Calibrate and document

The solution is validated, calibrated and delivered ready to use.
